Well - buying a used car in Spain can be a bit of a headache if you're not careful not only do you have to pay a tax based on the value and age of the car when you purchase you will also be responsible for unpaid debts left by the previous owner such as road tax, parking fines etc.
The tax reduces as the age of the vehicle increases - for example: a 12 month Ford Focus 1.8 diesel will be taxed on 85% of its retail value (around 400 Euros) then you can add on the other incidentals i.e. road tax, gestorias fees etc and you will probably be pushing the cost up to around the 1000 Euros mark - so to cover yourself add this on to your costings when looking.
If the engine size exceeds 2 litres the tax can easily double. If you're reading this in the UK and you want to buy a LHD car to bring over with you must have the ownership in your name shown on the v5 for a minimum of six months before you arrive this will allow you to bring in the car as part of your personal belongings. For example - a Mercedes 3.2 diesel around 5 years old in left hand drive with English plates can cost around 4000 Euros to be legal
